Powdered or confectioner’s sugar is not the same as icing sugar. Icing sugar contains cornstarch, powdered sugar does not. Powdered sugar is just sugar in a powder form.

You can buy fine sugar, extra fine sugar or confectioner’s sugar in specialty stores, but it’s expensive. People claim they can use a blender or a food processor to make powdered sugar. Except the blender burns and you need a top of the line food processor to turn sugar into powdered sugar. The easiest and cheapest way to make powdered sugar is to grind up white sugar in a [touch] coffee grinder; in batches. Fancy coffee grinders tend to clog up, but the simple grinder for 20 bucks does a good job turning white sugar into powdered sugar. Fill it up half way, place on the cap, and push the on button. Shake it a bit while the blades turn.

My photo
I began to post recipes for my family and it turned out to be a work in progress. "zsuzsa is in the kitchen" has over 900 recipes of Hungarian and international recipes. My recipes are organized into a cookbook format. On top of the page click on the cookbook to get access to all my recipes. If I ever figure out how to add a printer friendly gadget I will add it. In the meantime feel free to cut and paste. Happy cooking!
